Using USB touchpad to simulate touchscreen on your smartphone EmptyThu Aug 07, 2008 3:57 pm

I know this is a developers forum. But then again,I don't see any developers posting yet either. That said...
.
Using a USB touchpad to simulate a touchscreen. In case you dont know what a touchpad is,it's typically found on a laptop pc and takes the place of a mouse.Drag your finger across it and the mouse curser on screen moves with it.They also make small touchpads you can simply plug into your usb port.My idea would be to write up a software driver and small application that would allow one to use a touchpad on their WM smartphone. This would trick WM into thinking a touchscreen were also present and allow you to access many PPC apps. Not all ppc apps would work but it would greatly expand the range of software available for a smartphone user.
.
Why use a touchpad? Why not just go out and buy a PPC? Cost and convenience.Don't have to switch out phones and deal with having to go up to a local VZW/Sprint store.PPC's are typically much more expensive than smartphones.Touchpads..about $20 or so.I know only certain apps would run due to the nature of WM standard and WM pro.But again, more software is available for the average SP user..

I have a usb touchpad ....just sitting around.I don't use it though. It has the large type usb plug .I was looking for some kind of adaptor that converts a large usb plug into a micro usb plug.I'm sure they make them.I've got a good handful that I don't even use.
.
PPC does have a LOT of apps available.Because ppc has been around far longer than a smartphone, the available apps far exceeds those for SP's.I was drooling over an audio waveform editor that was only available for ppc. When your nowhere's near your pc,it comes in handy for cutomizing your ringtones and sending sound clips to buddies.Vito ringtone editor is way too basic and doesnt show any waveform data.
.
Just think, open a ppc app, drag your finger around touchpad and mouse arrow onscreen simulates where your finger would be.Hold your finger there and click button to access pop-up menu or activate onscreen button..I know it would be very difficult to type on one of those onscreen keyboards. But for everything else, such as browsing with Netfront or even a simple paint program,it would be quite useful.

I understand you're going to plug the touchpad into the mini-usb?

where's the touchpad gonna sit?

sounds cool, but it will definitely look ridiculous

I hear the mini-usb port for right now is passive and cannot power anything...so we can only look to the future

I'm not too worried about it. If I wanted a touch screen phone, I wouldn't have gotten the Q9c

I'm sorry, what I should have said was ""Even with the good ammount of ppc apps that wouldn't work on your SP,the average SP user would have more software to choose from than just SP software.""

I'm with Qarea51 on this. Before I had the Q9M I had an XV-6700 for 2 days.I liked that thing.A handy stylus holder, and just pulling it out an pokin around the screen was the easiest thing around.I liked how you could draw on the screen in the note taking app.Allthough it didn't do a good job of translating your writing into text. The only thing/s I didn't like about it were the slide out keypad (it was too cramped to type on the very top row) and the sound quality sucked. One tiny speaker dont cut it for me.

Now if they have a ppc out there with stereo speakers as good sounding as the Q's then I'd buy it.Otherwise I'm sticking with the Q.

The HTC Mogul I know has stereo speakers. I think its louder than my Q9c, built in WiFi, and its touchscreen.
